Museum Vist - Minibeasts

Marisa from the Discovery Centre talked about the difference between insects and spiders. She showed us a giant puppet bee.
We sorted bags of creatures into insects, spiders and others.
We used cut out pieces to learn about the different body parts of insects and spiders.
We looked at the live tarantulas. Do you know that they only feed the tarantulas on Thursdays!

Spiders and Flies - Rich Maths Tasks

Rich Maths Task  Conversation
22 legs can be seen on the spider web. There are flies and spiders.  How many flies and spiders are on the web?

Mikaela I think we have too many legs. We could take those two extra legs out. Cut them.”
Aotea “ We could take the spider out.”
Mikaela “No that would wreck it.”
Aotea “Maybe take the spider out and put a different one in.
Ok let’s count.”
“Maybe I could fold it” (Two legs are hidden from view.”)
Mikaela “Maybe we could take a spider out. We could try some flies. Try one.”
Aotea takes out the spider and puts in a fly.
They count. Success  2 spiders and 1 fly makes 22 legs. Great 'think, pair, share'.

Pumpkins

Last week Avondale Primary School had a pumpkin competition. Mr Renwick our new caretaker brought in his hobby pumpkins for us to see.

We touched and climbed all over them.

So what did we learn?

Pumpkins need lots of water.
They have hard skin but these ones are very soft and mushy inside.
The biggest weighs about 91kg.
The seed for these pumpkins is special and not like the normal pumpkin seeds used for growing pumpkins that we eat.

Later this year Mr Renwick is going to help Year 1 children grow these in the school garden.
